The Asa Majeed Leadership Centre (AMLC) is a non-profit organization striving to make a positive change and impact in under-serviced communities. For the past 10 years, as Islamic servants and leaders, we continue to strive to educate everyone about Islam through practice and knowledge, for the pleasure of our Creator.
The AMLC is the result of a selfless investment by the Asa Majeed Trust and the tireless hours contributed by a group of inspired young Muslims who have one common vision: to provide a platform for learning and shape the lives of all people seeking to empower themselves with knowledge.
Our goal is to become the largest and most beneficial free Islamic learning system in South Africa. We aim for our learning system to be accessible to all people who seek to gain a deeper understanding of Islam. Our passion is to support and provide the community we find ourselves in. The community feeding scheme in Tafelsig continues to grow and we aim to scale up and feed more mouths this year.
Our purpose is to guide people towards a closer relationship with Allah and to make positive changes in their lives in becoming stronger Muslims and leaders in our faith, equipped to serve their communities and humanity at large.
The AMLC is championed by a highly committed team of staff, instructors, volunteers and a professional board of trustees, endorsed by Sheik Ebrahim Gabriels, former chairman of the MJC.
The AMLC believes in providing learners with access to both free Islamic education as well as providing access to much-needed facilities and entertainment that encourages a balanced lifestyle.
ISLAMIC STUDIES
Our Centre runs seven (7) days a week. In the mornings from 08:30 – 13:00 we have the Hifz and Arabic classes for approximately 20 learners. In the afternoons from 14:00 to 18:00 we have our Muslim school (Madrassa) with approximately 120 – 150 students ranging in ages.
OTHER ACTIVITIES AT OUR CENTRE
The AMLC is open to all children from the area, completely free with no charge. We also offer all children both Muslim or non-muslim, the use of our computer and internet facilities for their school assignments, projects and research. Also, as many of these kids end up at the Madrassa hungry, we started a program, which provides them with a sandwich, noodles or soup when they arrive.
OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Movie Fridays (For the community, run every 2nd Friday and popcorn distributed to all present).
- Annual Excursion – This year we were again blessed to have taken the learners to Maidens Cove for a fun day out of swimming & sports. Food, drinks and snacks were kindly provided by the Staff of GTA as well as an afternoon braai. It has proven to be so successful that it now occurs annually & now sees more than 200 people in attendance.
- Our learners competed in the regular Footsil(soccer) competition on Saturdays. Our under 16 team won the league, as well as the AMLC teachers who competed in the under 30 League. Our learners also compete in official AMLC branded soccer kits.
- This year, have re-instituted our Soup and bread kitchen on Fridays open to the community.
- For our annual Ramadaan Charity drive, with the assistance of the AMLC Trustees and many volunteers, we were able to collect and distribute in excess of R140000 worth of food during the past Ramadaan (2019) thanks to a generous contribution of R120,000.00 in food parcels from the Jumuah Mosque in Cape Town. This event usually occurs during the last 10 days of Ramadaan. (see www.amlc.org.za for pics)
- Alhamdullilah, with the Grace and Guidance of the Almighty, we have been blessed to have had 10 young brothers and sisters embrace Islam at the Centre since its inception. This was always part of the vision in the establishment of the Centre.
- Successfully hosted our annual Mouwlood program for the youth.
- The Centre also hosts +-10 Moulanas from around Cape Town each Friday evening along with Moulana Ebrahim, our Principal, who utilize the space for a Halqa for recitation and study.
- Alhamdulillah, 1 of our Hifz students had completed the memorization of the Quraan over the last year.
OUR PEOPLE
The Asa Majeed Learnership Centre is led by our Principal Moulana Ebrahim Salie. He is supported by a team of qualified instructors in Deen that are passionate about teaching Islam to the community. We have both male and female instructors to teach our set curriculum to children and adults. Our curricular guidance is run by Sheikh E Gabriels & Sheikh R Rinquest.
